Join us for an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime, eleven-day tour of England, exploring the musical, cultural, and historical sites of this beautiful land. The choristers among the group are welcome to sing with the choir of St John’s Episcopal Church, Dallas, singing evensongs at the cathedrals of St Alban’s, Bristol, Chichester, and Gloucester. Coordinated by Peter and Simon Baldwin of Charter Tours, a company that specializes in musical travel, the cost of $1800 includes all hotels, transportation, and some meals. Airfare is not included but will be arranged as a group.
Tuesday, 30 July: Depart the USA for an overnight flight to Heathrow.
Wednesday, 31 July: Arrive London. Visit Windsor Castle en route to the picturesque town of Cheltenham, nestled in the Cotswolds, an official “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” as designated by the UK government. Check in at the Holiday Inn Express for a five-night stay.
Thursday, 1 August: After breakfast, depart to Bristol in the west. A historic city famous for its university and as a cradle of the Methodist movement, we will tour the famous Brunel suspension bridge before an afternoon at leisure. In the evening, sing evensong at the cathedral. We have dinner at the ZaZa Bazaar restaurant before departing for the hotel.
Friday, 2 August: We spend a leisurely day in the Cotswolds, stopping first at the ancient town of Cirencester, then at the village of Bibury, a Cotswold gem, finishing the afternoon in bucolic Burford before returning to our hotel.
Saturday, 3 August: We take a day trip to the Shakespeare town of Stratford-upon-Avon, visiting Anne Hathaway’s cottage, the museum, theatre, the lovely river, and Holy Trinity, the church in which the bard is buried. Afternoon will be spent at leisure.Sunday, 4 August: Spend free time in Cheltenham or attend church at Gloucester Cathedral. Sing evensong at the cathedral at 4.30, after which we enjoy an evening meal at a cozy local inn.
Monday, 5 August: A day in Oxford includes a guided tour of the city and colleges as well as free time for shopping. We depart that evening for the Renaissance Hotel Heathrow, London, where dinner is included.
Tuesday, 6 August: An early day takes us first to Stonehenge, before traveling onward to the lovely little city of Chichester, where we have lunch. After rehearsal in the cathedral, we sing evensong, celebrating the Feast of the Transfiguration. Dinner follows at the cathedral before departing for London.
Wednesday, 7 August: We journey to central London to spend a day seeing the sites, including the famous Tower of London, concluding hearing evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. We move to the Ibis Blackfriars Hotel Southwark just a few minutes from Southwark Cathedral and the River Thames. Spend the evening exploring this section of town at leisure.
Thursday, 8 August: Travel to St Alban’s for a guided city tour and lunch, followed by rehearsals and evensong at the cathedral. Dinner at St Alban’s before returning to London.
Friday, 9 August: Our final day is spent in London exploring on our own. An underground day pass offers transportation to the many sites of this world-class city, of which Samuel Johnson says, “When you are tired of London, you are tired of life.”
Saturday, 10 August: A morning flight returns us back to the USA.
